Starfall.com is a great free website for kids in the first grade learning to read. Is has a huge collection of online activities, songs, nursery rhymes and other materials that teach kids the alphabet and how to put the sounds together into words.

Question and Concern: I am a site supervisor level teacher who has a home school in Santa Maria CA (Holy Angels Day School, Orcutt CA) for children ages 4-8. My concern is how do I know if the on-line books for children are written with the same professionalism and values I have for my children since stories can reflect the view point and education of the writer. Who monitors the books?
What I like about Starfall is it is Web-based with no need to install any software. For some reason I feel safer that way but you need to have a hi-speed Internet to make this work. I also love the way they organized their lessons and the graphics used considering it’s free.
Starfall has been a savouir over the school holidays here in Australia. The kids habe been stuck at home with the rain and Star Fall has helped them extend their reading and words. I found it initally from your post here and thought I’d come back and comment. A very useful online learn to read resource.
